Inside the Poetics of “The Son of a Thousand Men”: Daniel Rezende’s New Adaptation

The new making-of highlights how Daniel Rezende translates Valter Hugo Mãe’s novel into a sensitive, symbolic, and luminous cinematic experience.

Netflix just dropped a new behind-the-scenes video for The Son of a Thousand Men, and it reinforces what audiences have been feeling since the film arrived on the platform: this is a story powered by tenderness. Crisóstomo’s line — “When the dream is so big, reality learns” — sets the tone for an adaptation that turns Valter Hugo Mãe’s intimate novel into a universal reflection on belonging.

Directed and written by Daniel Rezende, the film places Rodrigo Santoro at its emotional center. It’s not their first collaboration — they previously worked together on Monica and Friends – Bonds — and Rezende once again brings his signature touch to the screen: symbolic imagery, deliberate color work, and a quiet visual poetry that holds the narrative together.

In the featurette, Rezende describes the film as “about affection and care,” a sentiment that shapes everything from the performances to the mise-en-scène.

Santoro expands on this dynamic, explaining how:

the story eventually brings four characters together to form “a contemporary family — the family we choose,” referring to Isaura (Rebeca Jamir), Antonino (Johnny Massaro), and Camilo (Miguel Martines).

The video also highlights key creative voices behind the film’s lyrical atmosphere — Azul Serra (cinematography), Manuela Mello (costume design), and Taísa Malouf (production design) — whose work blends realism with a soft layer of imagination.

Shot between Igatu, in Chapada Diamantina, and Búzios, in Rio de Janeiro,The Son of a Thousand Men brought together more than 150 crew members and local communities, grounding this emotional fable in landscapes that echo the quiet beauty of the original text.

Starring Santoro, Rebeca Jamir, Johnny Massaro, Miguel Martines, Juliana Caldas, and more, the film is produced by Biônica Filmes and Barry Company and is now streaming on Netflix.

Unfortunately I couldn’t find a translated version of this video, but you can adjust the youtube automatic captions settings to english!
